Fiend to Friend - Fungus and the Hydroponic Grower

The ancient Romans had a legend regarding a malicious boy who tormented a fox by tying wheat straw to its tail and then setting the straw on fire. The Roman god Robigus was so irritated that he penalized humanity with wheat rust, the fungal disease that leaves a farmer's field looking as though it had been burned. For hundreds of years afterward, the Romans sought to pacify Robigus through sacrifices of dogs and cows with the misfortune of being born with rust-colored fur.

Modern hydroponic growers sacrifice too.  Increasingly by sacrificing plant quality and profits to prevent damage from a host of fungal "fiends" with names like black rot, club root, sclerotina blight, wire stem, sudden death syndrome, brown spot, and charcoal rot.  Opportunities for using beneficial fungi as "friends" exist for the grower as well. The best documented friendly use is mycorrhizal fungal inoculum for improving plant nutrient, uptake, plant quality and yields and disease resistance.  Whether fiend or friend, growers are increasingly aware of the fungus among us".  (Figure 1 Growth of tomatoes with and without mycorrhizal fungi)

Declaration of "Interdependence" for the Urban Garden

Mycorrhizal fungi are the 'tiny little secrets" for superior plant performance

By Mike Amaranthus Ph.D and Tim Eagan

The more we learn about life on Earth, the more we learn about the mechanics of superior plant performance. We now realize that in natural systems, organisms work not INDependently but INTERdependently.  There is no doubt that nature is less a battleground and more a marketplace. Symbiotic organisms that exchange materials and services in a mutually advantageous living arrangement can be the key to successful planting and growing. Hydroponic growers are gaining increased appreciation of the living soil and more frequently incorporating soil biology and mycorrhizal products into their practices.
